In the 2022–23 school year, the School District of Janesville (SDJ) implemented the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program across three high schools—Parker High School, Craig High School, and Rock University High School—to increase college and career readiness for underrepresented students. Since implementation, 192 students have participated in the program.
AVID is a nationally recognized college readiness system that equips students (particularly those in the academic middle) with the tools to succeed in rigorous coursework and pursue postsecondary opportunities. Through structured academic support, skills-based learning, and a focus on determination, AVID helps close achievement gaps and improve long-term outcomes.
To support the rollout and ongoing evaluation of AVID, SDJ turned to Nexus. The Nexus platform aggregates a plethora of student data in a secure data warehouse that can be indexed with a simple query. With the help of Nexus tools such as the dynamic dashboards and the Nexus chat, the Janesville District was able to generate real-time reports on GPA, attendance, discipline, and advanced coursework enrollment. These are all key indicators used to evaluate AVID’s effectiveness.
The insights gathered so far are promising. Students in the AVID program are earning higher GPAs and experiencing fewer suspensions than students not in the program. This suggests that AVID is driving positive change in both academics and behavior. Nexus makes these insights possible by giving district staff instant access to clean, centralized data across systems.
By integrating Nexus into their AVID evaluation strategy, SDJ can easily compare student performance, identify areas for support, and demonstrate the program’s value to stakeholders. This success story highlights how powerful AVID can be when paired with the right data tools, and how Nexus empowers districts to make smarter, faster decisions in support of student success. As the Janesville district continues to evaluate AVID’s effectiveness, Nexus serves as a vital tool for research, accountability, and long-term planning. Districts seeking to improve program evaluation, equity tracking, or college readiness initiatives can use Nexus to turn siloed data into measurable progress.
